George Goranitis was born on January 19, 1990, in Trumbull County, Ohio. He spent his formative years in the region, eventually graduating from high school in 2008. Following his graduation, George secured a position at the General Motors assembly shop in Lordstown, Ohio, where he became an integral part of the automotive manufacturing industry.

In 2019, George and his colleagues faced a significant challenge when the plant in Lordstown, with its long and storied history of automobile production, closed its doors. Undeterred, George transferred to the Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly plant, but ultimately decided to return to his roots and be closer to his family.

The landscape of opportunities shifted when Ultium Cells announced plans to establish a new plant in Lordstown through a joint venture between General Motors and LG. George seized the chance and joined the team on March 7, 2022. Recognizing the advantages of joining the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, George took it upon himself to educate and organize his colleagues about the benefits of union representation.

Months of hard work and dedication culminated in a decisive vote, with an overwhelming majority—710 in favor and 16 against—choosing to become part of the UAW. George's leadership qualities and commitment to his fellow workers were further highlighted when he was elected to the temporary bargaining committee to negotiate their first contract—a groundbreaking moment as the first unionized electric vehicle (EV) cell manufacturing facility in the United States.

Through 16 intense months of negotiations, George and his colleagues achieved a significant milestone by aligning their terms with the General Motors National agreement. Following the successful conclusion of their initial contract and the establishment of their local agreement, George decided to run for the position of Local Union President. His campaign resonated with the members, leading to his election victory.

Today, George Goranitis proudly serves as the UAW Local 1112 President, leading and representing the interests of his fellow workers with dedication, integrity, and a vision for a strong and prosperous future for the union and its members.
